Set Up a Stripe Account for Checkout

To take card payments in your MentorKit LMS Pro checkout, you need your own Stripe account. Payments go straight to your Stripe account and your bank, and your customers see your company name on their card statement. MentorKit never holds your money.

This article covers creating the account, verifying your company, connecting it to checkout through the official WooCommerce Stripe gateway, and who pays Stripe's fees.

How it fits together

Checkout in MentorKit LMS Pro runs on WooCommerce. Card payments are handled by Stripe through the official WooCommerce Stripe payment gateway. See Commerce Overview for the full picture.

Before you start

Have these ready. Verification is quicker when you do:

  • Your company's legal name and organisation number (organisasjonsnummer)
  • The registered address and a working website that describes what you sell (products or services, plus contact information)
  • Details for the people Stripe asks for during verification (for example the account representative, owners, or directors — Stripe shows what it needs for your company type and country)
  • A company bank account for payouts (Stripe asks for the details that match your bank's country; for Norwegian banks this is typically the IBAN)
  • A photo ID (passport or national ID card) for the people Stripe asks you to verify

1. Create the account

  1. Go to stripe.com and choose Sign up.
  2. Use a company email address (for example payments@yourcompany.no) rather than a personal address, so the account survives staff changes. Each person who needs access should have their own Stripe login — do not share a password between people. Invite colleagues as team members instead.
  3. When asked for the country, choose Norway (or the country where the business is based). The country affects available payment methods and cannot be changed after you activate live Stripe services. It does not permanently lock you to a single payout currency; you can manage payout currency and bank accounts later in the Dashboard.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication in your Stripe user / personal security settings (look under Settings or Personal details for Security / two-factor authentication).

2. Verify your company

Stripe may require additional business verification before enabling live payments or payouts. Follow the requirements shown in your Stripe Dashboard, and make sure both payments and payouts are enabled before you launch checkout.

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open your business / account details (often under Settings → Business) and complete activation if prompted.
  2. Enter the company details: legal name, organisation number, address, website, and a short description of what you sell.
  3. Add the people Stripe asks for, and upload ID when requested.
  4. Add the company bank account for payouts, using the fields Stripe shows for your bank.
  5. Stripe may ask for follow-up documents. Answer these promptly; unanswered requests can delay or pause payouts.

Stripe usually reviews within a few business days, but times vary. You can test the checkout in test mode while verification is in progress.

3. Give MentorKit access and connect Stripe

Connecting Stripe to your checkout is not the same as giving MentorKit ongoing Dashboard access. The recommended connection uses the official OAuth flow in the WooCommerce Stripe extension: MentorKit prepares WooCommerce and the gateway on your site; someone with sufficient rights on your Stripe account then approves the connection on Stripe's own connect page (connect.stripe.com).

WooCommerce recommends this OAuth connection. Connecting with manually entered API keys is a documented exception that can leave payment-method sync disabled — we only use it if we raise it with you ourselves.

Who can approve the connection

On Stripe's User roles page, the permission Connect account to Connect platforms is listed for the Account owner, Administrator, Super Administrator, and Developer roles. Most analyst and support roles cannot. In practice we ask the account owner or an Administrator to complete the approval step.

Two practical ways

Option A — Approve the connect step with us (preferred for most customers)

  1. MentorKit installs and prepares the WooCommerce Stripe gateway on your site.
  2. You (as account owner or Administrator), or someone with that role, joins a short session with us.
  3. From WooCommerce (typically WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Stripe), we start Create or connect an account.
  4. You sign in to Stripe if needed and approve the connection on Stripe's connect page.
  5. Back in WooCommerce, we confirm that Payments, Payouts, Webhook, and Sync all show as enabled.

Option B — Invite MentorKit as Administrator for the connect step

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open your team settings (often Settings → Team and security → Team) and choose Invite team members.
  2. Enter the email address we give you and choose the Administrator role so we can complete the OAuth approval if you prefer not to join the session.
  3. After the connection is live and checked, downgrade our role to something lower (for example Developer) for ongoing troubleshooting, or remove us if you no longer need Dashboard access.

You do not need to share your Stripe password with us, and you should not.

After connection

In the Stripe extension's account details, check that Payment, Payout, Webhook, and Sync are enabled. Test mode and live mode are connected separately — being connected in one does not mean the other is ready.

4. What we set up and test on our side

Once the gateway is ready to connect (and after you approve OAuth, or after we connect with temporary Administrator access), we:

  1. Finish connecting the WooCommerce Stripe payment gateway to your account. In the standard OAuth flow, the extension configures webhooks for you — there is normally no separate manual webhook setup.
  2. Confirm Payments, Payouts, Webhook, and Sync are enabled for the mode you are using.
  3. Test the full purchase chain in Stripe test mode with a test card:
    • Payment is approved in Stripe
    • WooCommerce receives the status and the order reaches the correct status
    • MentorKit creates or links the WordPress user
    • The learner gets course (or group) access
    • The order confirmation / account email is sent
  4. Connect and check live mode separately once your account requirements allow live payments and payouts, then confirm with a real, small payment that you can refund.

A successful card charge alone is not enough — access depends on the whole chain above.

5. Go live together

Before you treat checkout as production-ready, both sides confirm:

  • A successful live payment on the correct Stripe account
  • The learner received access and the confirmation email
  • You recognise the company name / statement descriptor and the bank account used for payouts

Fees

Stripe's fees are charged to your Stripe account, not to MentorKit. They are deducted from each payment before payout. Fees depend on the card type and country, so check the current rates on Stripe's pricing page for Norway.

These fees are separate from your MentorKit subscription.

Common questions

Can we change the Stripe account later? Yes, you can disconnect and connect a different Stripe account, and you can invite or remove team members at any time. Historical payments, refunds, and payouts stay on the Stripe account that processed them — switching accounts does not move that history.

Do learners need a Stripe account? No. They pay with a card at checkout and get a WordPress account and course access automatically. See Account Settings.

What about VAT? WooCommerce can calculate and display tax (MVA) on the order. That does not by itself mean every tax or bookkeeping requirement for your business is covered. See Tax Class per Course and Group, and check with your accountant for filing and compliance.

Who do we contact if Stripe holds a payout or needs more verification? Stripe Support, from the Dashboard — they are the ones who can see account holds and verification status. MentorKit can help with the WooCommerce connection and the checkout → enrolment chain on your site.
